How to Choose Pet-Friendly Furniture

In a perfect world, pets would heed the words “stay off the sofa,” but when they’re home alone, they make the rules. So if you share your home with a pet, choose furniture and decor that can withstand pet traffic.

Take a look at these tips for choosing pet-friendly furnishings:

Choose the Right Area Rug

In The Wylde’s Westside Indianapolis apartments, the kitchen and main living areas have modern plank flooring – the perfect surface for a stylish and colorful area rug. If you have pets, stick to these best practices when choosing a rug:

  • Avoid sisal and jute – cats can’t resist scratching these sturdy rugs

  • Avoid fluffy rugs and rugs with a deep nap – these rugs snag, become matted, and trap fur and allergens

  • Coordinate with your pet’s fur color – most pets will naturally prefer to nap on a rug rather than a bare floor, so choose a color or pattern that will hide pet hair in between vacuumings

Don’t spend a fortune on a rug. Try out an inexpensive short-nap rug that meets the above requirements, and see how it holds up. If it still looks nice after six months, you could consider upgrading to something fancier.

Pick Your Fabrics Wisely

Velvet upholstery is beautiful … unless it’s covered in pet hair and stains. If you have your heart set on a velvet sofa, be prepared to vacuum it and spot-clean it regularly.

Generally, for pet-friendly upholstery, you want a heavy fabric with a tight weave. Coated canvas, denim, and outdoor fabrics resist staining and damage, and a tight weave helps repel pet hair. Avoid loosely woven fabrics like linen, which can snag easily. If your sofa is a light color, treat it with Scotchgard to repel liquids and stains.

Buy Pieces for Your Pets

Some pets have no interest in a sofa, as long as they have their own personal cozy spot. A plush dog bed or floor pillow, or a cat tower with a carpeted perch may be enticing enough to keep animals off furniture.
